From the small town of Katihar in Bihar to getting my first job in Tokyo Japan, Shyam Maheshwari feels it has been very fulfilling. He completed his undergrad and Chartered Accounting from Kolkata and an MBA from IIM Bangalore. He got an opportunity to work for Lehman Brothers, right after the Asian Financial Crisis, in their Tokyo and Hong Kong offices as part of their special situation desk. He witnessed closely the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers which triggered the Global Financial Crisis and ultimately led to the founding of SSG Capital in early 2009. He grew SSG Capital to be one of the premier and the largest special situation and credit funds in Asia over the next 12 years ultimately doing a strategic partnership and integration with Ares Management. After successful integration and transition, he has taken a break. But knowing his personality and having spoken to many industry participants, “break” is not what is expected of Shyam Maheshwari . Ukraine mobilizes volunteer 'IT Army,' crypto community in war with Russia

Ukrainian leaders are sourcing power from a volunteer “IT Army,” fundraising through cryptocurrency donations and using public pleas on social media to leverage global attention as they fight an adversary adept at online attacks. The country’s novel digital tactics are part of an “on [the] fly” approach to respond to the Russian invasion that changed Ukrainian life overnight, Ukraine’s deputy minister of digital transformation, Alex Bornyakov , told The Hill. “Till the last moment, we didn’t believe it was going to be a full scale war,” he said. “Even the day before the war, we were just living the normal life and planning meetings, planning our actions — all like regular life. And once it started, we realized that we have to act completely differently than it was before,” he added. Like so many others, Bornyakov said he was woken up early in the morning three weeks ago by the sounds of explosions. Two days after the first attacks, he was evacuated from Kyiv to a safer location in...

Pope issues Vatican reform aimed at combating abuse

Image
Pope Francis on Saturday unveiled a new constitution for the Holy See that will place term limits on clerics, better protect minors and allow women to head Vatican departments for the first time. The Praedicate evangelium, or “Preach the Gospel,” will be enacted on June 5 as the new constitution for the Catholic church’s governing body. It replaces the 1988 constitution passed by Pope St. John Paul II. According to a release from the Vatican, the new constitution allows any baptized lay Catholic, or an ordinary member of the church, to be appointed to governmental roles. That opens the door for women to head a Vatican department for the first time. “One cannot fail to take this into account in the updating of the Curia, whose reform, therefore, must provide for the involvement of laymen and women, even in roles of government and responsibility,” the constitution reads. The Praedicate evangelium also unifies the Commission for the Protection of Minors into the Doctrine of Faith...

Zelenskyy: 130 rescued, ‘hundreds’ under Mariupol theatre rubble

Image
Up to 1,000 may have been taking refuge underground at the time of the blast, which Ukraine blames on Russia. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 130 people had been saved after the bombing of a theatre in the port city of Mariupol under Russian siege, but “hundreds” were still trapped in the rubble. Ukraine accused Russia of hitting the theatre on Wednesday. It had been feared that up to 1,000 people may have been taking refuge underground at the time of the blast. Russia has denied responsibility for the attack. “More than 130 people have been saved. As war ravages Ukraine, refugee crisis hits Polish cities

Image
While there is no shortage of generosity in Ukraine’s Central European neighbour, space runs out in several cities. Krakow, Poland  — In four weeks of war, three million people have left war-ravaged Ukraine with the majority crossing into Poland. While the welcome from the government and civil society has been open-armed, space is running out for the newcomers. Krzysztof Chawrona, a 41-year-old entrepreneur from Krakow and founder of Nidaros, an organisation that supports Ukrainian nationals, is among those who have given up space in their own homes for refugees. “My son is staying with his auntie because I gave my flat away to eight refugees,” Chawrona, father of four, told Al Jazeera. “In my second flat, which I used to rent out to one company, there are seven people in 40 square metres. And they are grateful that they have a place to stay.” Read More https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/3/18/polish-cities-running-out-of-capacity-to-help-ukraine-refugees

Sudan: Russian influence and Ukraine war stir domestic tensions

Officials courted Russian influence but the interference and the war in Ukraine are driving a wedge between its two most powerful men and stirring up domestic tensions. Khartoum, Sudan  — On February 23, the eve of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a group of Sudanese officials landed in Moscow. The delegation was led by Mohamad Hamdan Dagalo — aka Hemeti — who is the deputy chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council and head of a powerful paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). As various voices worldwide condemned and sanctioned Russian President Vladimir Putin for the invasion, Hemeti took part in a photo-op with the Kremlin’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. “Russia has the right to act in the interests of its citizens and protect its people under the constitution and the law,” Hemeti said during his visit to Russia. Personal ties that bind: How Xi-Putin relationship has evolved

Image
The warm relationship between leaders of China and Russia is unlikely to differ much in short term, even if Beijing distances itself from the Ukraine invasion. It was only six weeks ago that Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, met shortly before the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics and released a sweeping 5,000-word statement that reaffirmed their no-limits relationship . As Moscow massed tens of thousands of soldiers on the border of Ukraine, together the pair in their 38th in-person meeting in nine years disavowed NATO, the United States-European military alliance forged in the Cold War and now grappling with a resurgent Russia. Anurag Batra On Recycling Business and Sustainability of The Environment

Image
Anurag Batra says that the Business world is a Business Media platform but business recycling also has an impact on the environment and as we move towards sustainability, the last 21 months have taught us that all of us are more connected and what happened in one part of the world impacts all of us.   He thinks the value of sustainability and recycling is becoming more and more important and each stakeholder is taking his or her duty of contributing to a better greener environment and to a greener economy that is sustainable over time.   The recycling summit for a greener tomorrow is an initiative by the BW business world in that direction to be able to contribute to the consciousness of recycling and sustainability.
